Why Black Tourism Matters

Philadelphia's tourism industry generates billions of dollars every year. Yet many of the Black museums, tour companies, and cultural organizations do not have the huge marketing budget to get the foot traffic they deserve. Most of the brands featured are ran by just one or two people wearing every hat imaginable - creating content, handling meetings, writing grants, giving tours, and fighting to preserve our neighborhoods and stories that are boldly being erased today.

Like a lot of Black travelers, I got tired of spending hours searching for Black-owned businesses, authentic experiences, and places where I felt like I belonged. I didn't want another trip centered around the same tourist traps. I wanted to meet local people, support their businesses, and leave feeling connected to the city.

So I created the kind of community brand I had been searching for. Philly is a BLACKITY BLACK city with little resources and amplification outside of Black History Month & Juneteenth. My purpose in life is to give us a safe soft spot to land as a local and visitor.

Heyyyyy! I'm Chrissy, a Philly jawn, mom, speaker, hood advocate, and the founder of Philly Experiences.

For the past eight years, I've helped thousands of locals and visitors experience Black Philadelphia through neighborhood tours, cultural events, party buses, and digital guides that celebrate our history, creativity, and joy while supporting more than 50 Black-owned businesses

.

I believe Black travelers deserve more than a list of things to do. We deserve experiences that make us feel seen, welcomed, and connected. We deserve to hear our stories from the people who live them and spend our dollars where they make a real difference.

That's why I do this work.
